The city has begun distributing green carts to about 3,700 Mililani homes that will be participating in the pilot curbside recycling project starting Nov. 3.
Residents can request a 96-gallon green recycling cart for their recyclable and green waste. They also can use their existing gray 96-gallon carts for their recyclable materials.
City officials said they started distributing the green carts yesterday, but the bulk of them will be delivered next week.
The four-month project is available to 10,000 Mililani homes, and data collected from the program will be used to create an islandwide program, according to the city.
"We anticipate a good response from the community, because our preliminary survey of Mililani residents yielded enthusiastic support," Honolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris said in a press release.
City crews will pick up recyclable waste such as newspapers, aluminum, plastic and glass -- which can be left in the same cart -- every other week. Green waste will be picked up the following week.
The city said that regular trash pickup will continue on its twice-a-week schedule.
Under the pilot plan, Mililani residents will have the following trash and recycling schedules:
>> Residents in the central area of Mililani town who have Tuesday and Friday trash pickups will have their recyclable material picked up on the first Wednesday of the month, while green waste will be taken on the following Wednesday.
This area includes the center of Mililani town, between Kuahelani Avenue and Meheula Parkway and southeast of Kamehameha Highway and Meheula Parkway.
>> Residents in the mauka section of Mililani whose refuse is collected on Mondays and Thursdays will have their recyclable material and green waste collected on alternating Tuesdays.
This area includes Mililani Mauka and the northern end of Mililani, generally north of Kuahelani Avenue.
>> Residents in the southern section of Mililani will continue to have Wednesday and Saturday trash pickups. Recyclable waste and green waste will be picked up on alternating Thursdays.
This area is generally southwest of Kamehameha Highway and Meheula Parkway and includes an area west of there that is south of the Mililani Golf Club and near Mililani Market Place.
