Hawaii HomeOwnership Center board members and supporters sanctify the water used in the blessing ceremony yesterday that marked the opening of the facility in Gentry Pacific Design Center. The HomeOwnership Center will provide a wide range of services and training to help customers find, purchase, insure and maintain their homes. Among the services offered will be home-buyer education; one-on-one case management; individual credit counseling and debt management; financial literacy training; referrals to professionals such as Realtors, lenders and insurance agents; and post-purchase counseling. The center says an estimated 27,000 renters on Oahu could qualify for a mortgage. For information or class enrollment, call 523-9500.

Dole to upgrade plant on Oahu

Dole Food Co. said it will spend $2.2 million to upgrade its pineapple packing plant in central Oahu. Dole, a Hawaii pineapple pioneer which no longer cans pineapple in the islands, packs fresh pineapple at the plant for export to the mainland.

There will be an additional investment in new equipment, the company said. Dole Food, founded in Hawaii in the 1800s but now a worldwide food producer and shipper with $4.4 billion in annual revenues, is a private company owned by California financier David Murdock. He also owns another old Hawaii company, Castle & Cooke Inc.

TheoDavies alerts state to sale

A copy of a memo addressed to employees of TheoDavies Euromotors Ltd. and other automotive businesses was sent to the Work force Development Branch of the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations this week.

The office receives notices of business closings or sales affecting large numbers of employees, but in this case, the buyer has agreed "to offer employment to all employees of TheoDavies Euromotors in the same or similar job that each of you held prior to the closing," the memo said. Closing of the deal is expected Dec. 31.

The memo stated the intention of TheoDavies and Reed/Jones management to communicate with employees periodically regarding the pending transfer "as soon as that information becomes available." Many employees learned of the sale in the Star-Bulletin despite company efforts to cut out stories from the dealerships' newspapers.
