Rainbow Wahine advance in tennis tournament
SAN DIEGO >> The Hawaii women's tennis team started its fall season by advancing two singles players and two doubles teams yesterday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Western Regional.
Hawaii's Lauren Fitzgerald and Sylvia Jaros advanced to today's main draw, as did the doubles teams of Fitzgerald and Paige Mainor and Jaros and Kana Aikawa.
"It was a learning experience for our younger girls, who were nervous going in," UH coach Carolyn Katayama said. "But as their matches progressed they all gained a lot of confidence and can only learn from it."
Group condemns Stephenson's comments
The Honolulu Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League of Hawaii has condemned LPGA golfer Jan Stephenson's remarks in the current issue of Golf Magazine, the organization said in a release.
Stephenson said, "The Asians are killing our tour. Absolutely killing it," and decried Asians' lack of cooperation in publicity events and refusal to speak English. An Australian, Stephenson also called for a limit of foreign players on the LPGA Tour. Stephenson apologized Oct. 11 while playing in the Turtle Bay Championship.
"Stephenson's comments fuel negative stereotypes of Asians," the JACL said. "JACL Hawaii appreciates Ms. Stephenson's apology.
"Stereotypes of people based on their race or gender cannot be tolerated in a society that prides itself on diversity. Civil rights organizations like JACL have spent the last 75 years combating this type of racial stereotyping, and it must stop."
