Two shipwrecks in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands were examined on a recently completed National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration research cruise.
One is the 133-year-old wreck of the American warship USS Saginaw. The other could be the remains of the American whale ship Parker. Both are submerged in state waters at Kure Atoll.
The team that found the USS Saginaw was lead by Hans Van Tilburg, maritime heritage manager for the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Coral Reef Ecosystem.
"These discoveries are one of a continuing and growing legacy of exploration by both our scientists and those of our partners," said Richard Spinrad, assistant administrator for NOAA's National Ocean Service.
