Jarrett student
wins 'Radio' contest

Niccole Griffin, an 8th grader at Jarrett Middle School, is the winner of the Star-Bulletin promotions department's "Radio" essay contest, in which people were invited to name their hometown hero.

Griffin wrote of Jarrett special-education teacher Kini Smith, known to her students as "Miss Kini":

"She not only does her job and does it very well, but she goes way beyond, like she takes her kids bowling almost every week and to Ala Moana every Tuesday for an outing.

"She does lots of things with her kids and best of all, she pays for it out of her own pocket. (She) even pays for the small yellow bus that takes them all, and (their) wheelchairs too."

Griffin won VIP passes for her and Smith to attend the Hawaii premiere of "Radio," the film staring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Ed Harris. The film was inspired by a true story about the mentoring relationship between a high school football coach and a mentally challenged young man.
