Kahumoku could miss road trip

Senior All-American Lily Kahumoku may miss this week's road trip for the Hawaii women's volleyball team.

Kahumoku sat out last Thursday's match against Louisiana Tech with back spasms, a situation aggravated by the preceding week's airplane travel. She had 17 kills and a 16 dig in Hawaii's five-game win over Arizona.

Kahumoku's status was to be evaluated after this morning's practice, according to Rainbow Wahine coach Dave Shoji.

The No. 2 Wahine (19-1) are scheduled to leave this evening for a three-match trip, taking on Rice Thursday, LSU Friday and Tulsa Saturday.

Abe-Kaneko grabs second seed at Oahu Club

Shane Abe and Scotty Kaneko had lowest qualifying score for the Aloha Secion PGA 4-ball match play championship yesterday at Oahu Country Club.

Abe and Kaneko shot a 62 to beat Andrew Feldman and Larry Stubblefield by a stroke but will only be the second seed. Feldman and Stubblefield earned that right as the defending champion. Matches begin today at 7 a.m.

Kodama third: Hawaii's Matt Kodama finished the first round of the Barona Collegiate Cup tied for third place at Lakeside, Calif., yesterday.

Kodama shot a 68 to trail leader Chris Cousins of Alabama-Birmingham. The Warriors are tied for 14th.

Atay honored by WAC

Hawaii sophomore goalkeeper Mahie Atay was named the Western Athletic Conference's defensive player of the week for the seond time yesterday.

Atay, of Wailuku, Maui, didn't give up a goal in 210 minutes of action for the Rainbow Wahine.

Lin repeats in PacWest

Brigham Young-Hawaii middle blocker Chun Yi Lin won the Pacific West Conference's player of the week award for volleyball after leading the Seasiders to a pair of sweeps over Chaminade.

It was Lin's second award of the season. She leads the conference in hitting percentage and blocks.
