Metzger in beach volleyball finals

Punahou graduate Stein Metzger and new partner Dax Holdren upset Brazilians Benjamin Insfran and Marcio Henrique Araujo 21-19, 21-14 to reach the finals of the Beach Volleyball World Championships at Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, yesterday.

Metzger and Holdgren will play top-seeded Brazilians Alex Costa Santos and Emanuel Rego in the final today. It is Metzger's first final with Holdgren after splitting with fellow Punahou alum Kevin Wong in August.

"I'm very happy Kevin decided to kick me out, we had relationship problems; it made it very hard to play together," Metzger told FIVB.org. "Dax has a family, he's more calm and easy to get along with."

Christensen wins at Kaneohe Klipper

Hawaii Pacific runner Nina Christensen ran 3,000 meters in 10 minutes, 30 seconds to win the Hawaii cross country sprint invitational at the Kaneohe Klipper golf course yesterday.

Christensen beat teammate Janine Brown by 28 seconds. HPU's William Ngetich won the men's 5K race, finishing in 15:58 to edge teammates Mikkel Kleis (16:33) and Abdeslam Naji (16:57).
