Viloria caught in legal fight

Waipahu flyweight Brian Viloria hopes to end his longest layoff since breaking his hand in his first professional fight, but has some paperwork to take care of first.

Gary Gittelsohn, Viloria's manager, is at odds with promoter Lou DiBella over the lack of work DiBella has been able to provide. Both sides hope to be able to iron out their differences in time to get Viloria a fight Nov. 21. DiBella has been Viloria's promoter throughout his professional career while Gittelsohn has managed the fighter the entire time.

"We are all friends but I am the one who has to hold DiBella's feet to the fire on this," Gittelsohn said. "Brian is very special to me."

Gittelsohn has told DiBella that Viloria will need at least two fights by the end of the year to make up for the three months of activity since the North American Boxing Federation's flyweight champion knocked out Luis Doria in the first round July 22 at Pismo Beach, Calif. DiBella cites market conditions as the main sticking point.

Viloria, who also holds the World Boxing Council youth flyweight title, last took more than three months off when he broke his right hand in a win over Benjamin Escobia at Pearl Harbor in May 2001. Viloria is unbeaten in 13 fights with eight knockouts.

Gittelsohn says Viloria has received a commitment from ESPN to make him a headliner again earlier next year in Hawaii during Pro Bowl week.

Salud pushed back: Jesus Salud's return to the ring has been delayed due to immigration problems.

The card, which will feature the former world champion's return after 18 months off in a title fight against Ruben Estanisloa of Mexico, is being pushed back because of immigration problems faced by some of the fighters on the card. The card was to be held Oct. 24 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
