Mainland Catholic deacons to meet here

Catholic deacons from nine states and Canada will convene here Friday for the joint convention of the Asian Pacific Deacons Association and the North American Korean American Deacons Association.

The three-day program of lectures and meetings at St. Stephen's Diocesan Center in Maunawili will include a presentation by Deacon Ed Cho of Honolulu about Blessed Damien DeVeuster, 19th Century missionary to leprosy patients on Molokai.

Visiting deacons and their wives will make a pilgrimage visit to Damien's church, St. Philomena's, in Kalaupapa on Oct. 27.

Honolulu Catholic Bishop Francis DiLorenzo will preside at a 9 a.m. Mass Oct. 26 at St. George Church in Waimanalo, which is open to the public.

Pacific Health Ministry to hold fund-raiser

The Pacific Health Ministry will hold its annual fund-raising dinner and silent auction Nov. 1.

"Touching Many Hearts, Reaching Out to Many More" will be the theme of the event at Koolau Golf and Country Club. Musical entertainment will be provided by "Shades of Midnight."

Tickets are $95 per person and $175 per couple. Friday is the deadline for reservations. Call 591-6556.

A portion of the cost is tax-deductible. The agency provides chaplains for several island hospitals and trains clergy and lay people to counsel sick and bereaved people.

Haleiwa Buddhists offering free seminar

The Haleiwa Shingon Mission will continue its tradition of providing the community with information about Buddhism with a free public seminar next weekend.

Speaking about the "Internationalization of Shingon Buddhism" will be Jay Sakashita, a lecturer on religion at Leeward Community College, and Sayaka Iwata, a Taisho University instructor and former editor of the Japanese viewpoint magazine "Chuoh-Kohron."

The seminar will be presented from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 26 at the mission at 66-469 Paalaa Road. It is the eighth year that the mission has presented its Thanksgiving and Gratitude Seminar.

Monday is the deadline for reservations for a free lunch to be served during the program. Call 637-4423.

Seminar will consider different religions

An exploration of similarities and differences among major religions will be offered in a seminar at 7 p.m. Thursday at Punahou School's Thurston Chapel.

"Finding Common Ground, an Evening of Spiritual Understanding" will be sponsored by the faculty and students of the school's world religions class and by Believers All Network, a community interfaith group.

Author Saleem Ahmed, who was raised as a Muslim, will present an introductory lecture "My religion also says that" to which representatives of several beliefs have been invited to respond and compare. The program will include a presentation of music, dance and poetry from the mystic traditions of various religions.

The program is free and open to the public.

Lecture on U.N.'s role in global security

The role of the United Nations in global security will be explored in a lecture next weekend by University of Hawaii political science professor Carolyn Stephenson.

The talk at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at the First Unitarian Church of Honolulu, 2500 Pali Highway, will kick off a public "Issues and Action Forum," to continue on the fourth Sunday of each month after the 10:15 a.m. service.

Hawaiian sovereignty, media responsibility and civil liberties after the 9/11 terrorism are among the topics planned for the series sponsored by the church's Social Justice Committee.

There is no admission charge. A hot lunch may be purchased.
