Maui contractor gets $2.2 mil pact
KIHEI >> Central Construction of Kahului has been awarded a $2.2 million contract to develop a 2,200-foot boardwalk at Maalaea Flats, along with three kiosks, a bridge over an outlet to Kealia Pond, and interpretive panels.
Construction is scheduled in two phases, with a break during the nesting season for endangered water birds from January to early August.
The contract was awarded by the project manager, the Federal Highway Administration's Central Federal Highway Lands Division.
Glynnis Nakai, manager of the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge, said the boardwalk will provide great opportunities for residents and visitors to learn about the coastal environment, including endangered Hawaiian stilts and coots.
