LUCKY DUBE
RETURNS TO KAPONO'S

art
WELCOME BACK!: Lucky Dube, left, played Kapono's almost exactly one year ago, and returned for an equally impressive 2-hour 40-minute concert on Friday. The South African reggae superstar talked backstage with concert promoter Tom Moffatt shortly before he took the stage. Dube featured several songs from his new album, "The Other Side," which is not yet in stores here.

LOPAKA CHECKS IN: Lopaka Colón, left, talked with club owner Henry Kapono while the capacity crowd waited for Lucky Dube. Colón was one of the stars of last weekend's Don Tiki tribute to Martin Denny. Kapono is writing songs for a new album and working on the upcoming Cecilio & Kapono "live" album and DVD. C&K plays a two-nighter with the Honolulu Symphony Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.

HANGIN' OUT: KTUH disc jockey Loriel, left, events promoter G-Spot, and Lukas of Empire Sound, didn't let a little rain dampen their enjoyment of the concert. Dube did enough classics to please fans who remember him from the days of "Slave" and "Warrior," and introduced some great new songs: "Cool Down," The Other Side," "Julie, Julie" and "Ding Ding Licky Licky Bong."
