A&B purchases Colorado center

The real estate subsidiary of Honolulu-based Alexander & Baldwin Inc. has bought a new 95,250-square-foot shopping center north of Denver for about $11 million.

The Broadlands Marketplace, in Broomfield, Colo., is anchored by Safeway and is about 85 percent leased. A&B acquired the center in a 1031 tax-deferred exchange using proceeds from properties previously sold. The community's population is expected to grow 24 percent through 2010, A&B said.

Hawaii's fifth-largest private landowner, A&B recently acquired the 1100 Alakea St. building in downtown Honolulu for $20 million and several resort properties on Maui and Kauai for $131.5 million.

Castle Foundation grant to aid kids

The Harold K.L. Castle Foundation has given $125,000 to the Hawaii Business Roundtable, through the Good Beginnings Alliance, to improve Hawaii's schools by publicizing information their performance.

The initiative will use a "Just for the Kids" model that will post data on the Internet illustrating the strengths, weaknesses, academic potential and long-term progress of each public school district and campus in Hawaii.

Just for the Kids, a Texas nonprofit, joined the University of Texas at Austin and the Education Commission of the States in 2001 to form the National Center for Educational Accountability.

The Hawaii Business Roundtable is a group of local business leaders that advocates public policies.

Jr. Achievement seeks nominees

Junior Achievement of Hawaii is looking for nominees for its 2004 Business Hall of Fame Laureates award to recognize entrepreneurial skills and civic activities.

The selection committee is made up of leaders from the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, Small Business Hawaii, the Hawaii Council on Economic Education, the Hawaii Business Roundtable and Junior Achievement.

The awards ceremony is scheduled for March.

Fruit Growers event set for Hilo

Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers will hold its annual conference Oct. 24 to 26 in Hilo. The theme of the conference is "Growing Quality Fruit and Getting it to Market."

The keynote speaker will be Yan Diczbalis, senior horticulturalist at the Center for Wet Tropics Agriculture in Australia.

Jury begins banker's deliberations

NEW YORK >> A federal jury began deliberating yesterday the fate of Frank P. Quattrone, the former star technology banker, after the judge instructed them on the law and cautioned them that the case is "important to the government, the defendant and the public at large."

The instructions to the jury of six men and six women came after the defense finished its closing argument, pleading with the jurors to judge Quattrone "not as a symbol." The prosecution completed its rebuttal by telling them that "no one stands above the law -- no matter how smart or how busy or how powerful or how successful."

Host Marriott's loss widens

BETHESDA, Md. >> Host Marriott Corp., the country's largest hotel real-estate investment trust, reported a much wider third-quarter net loss of $88 million and lowered its outlook for the full year.

The company, which agreed Tuesday to buy the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa for $321 million, cited lower-than-expected revenue per available room.
