Two men who died in a car crash over the weekend were legally drunk, according to the Honolulu Medical Examiner's office.
An autopsy showed 20-year-old Ryan Kono's blood-alcohol level was 0.218, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08. Andrew Ngan, 21, had a blood alcohol level of 0.101 percent.
Police said both men were in a 1995 Honda Accord speeding east along Ala Moana at 4:15 a.m. Sunday, and may have been racing with another vehicle.
Police said the driver of the Honda lost control and the car skidded into the path of an oncoming 1982 GMC sport utility vehicle, which crashed into the Honda's side.
Police at the scene did not know whether Kono or Ngan was driving since both men were ejected from the Honda. The two men were pronounced dead at the scene.
A Navy man in the GMC was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. Naval officials said yesterday that because of hospital privacy laws they could not give information on the victim's condition.
Traffic investigators said Kono's and Ngan's deaths were the 64th and 65th traffic fatalities on Oahu this year, compared with 51 for the same period last year.
In a separate case, a Kailua man died yesterday from injuries sustained in a collision along the Pali Highway Friday, bringing the traffic fatality total to 66 this year.
