Local ‘Herstory’ makes
history for Sally Ride

WOMAN'S Day: Apparently upset with the perceived slight to women in discussing history, the Junior League of Honolulu has invited astronaut Sally Ride to be the keynote speaker at what they call "HerStory 2004," the group's annual women's conference. It's not due to take place until April 30 next year, but women know how to plan ahead. Fittingly, La Pietra -- Hawaii School for Girls, has signed on as a sponsor for "HerStory," and Ride will also address La Pietra students on campus during her visit. Sorry, but I can't hear the astronaut's name without thinking of the song "Mustang Sally," which contains the line, "Ride, Sally, Ride." ...

THE Chicago Tribune ran a line recently that identified O'Toole's downtown as a popular hangout for Cubs fans, and even called bar manager Patrick Oliver to confirm that it, in fact, was. Public-relations man Ray Sweeney just had a birthday, and when asked what one it was, he referred one and all to the price of Reyn Spooner shirts, practically all he wears. He bought his first one, said Sweeney, when he was 25 and it cost him $25. Today's price: $65. Like the years on Sweeney, the price seems to go up one notch per year ...

AT Fine Art Hawaii's Friday show, Mihoko M's "Jazz-Matazz," the works on display are referred to as "Paintings you can tap your feet to." That failing, there'll also be piano stylings by Rich Crandall, providing aural eye candy. The show runs from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday ... A few months ago we mentioned that the Bistro at Century Center was visited by one of the original Bistro owners on Kapiolani, Karl Diebold. He's returned to his home in France, but his ex-Bistro partner Mike Pirics, has now managed to sample the cuisine at the eatery borrowing his name. Far removed from Diebold these days -- Pirics lives in Western Samoa -- they agreed the new Bistro met with their approval ...
