[ TURNING POINT ]
Akpan's big block sways momentum
Deeds like last night's blocked kick were predicted for Nkeruwem "Tony" Akpan by Hawaii coach June Jones when the former UH basketball player first came out for football last spring.
But not even Jones expected Akpan to make game-swinging plays so early in his career.
With Hawaii leading 17-14 in the second quarter, Akpan, a 6-foot-7, 254-pound sophomore, leaped and deflected Brett Visintainer's field-goal attempt of 37 yards. UH's Abraham Elimimian recovered the ball at the Hawaii 1 and returned it to the 14.
The play prevented Fresno State from tying the game. Just a few minutes later, it no longer was one, as the Warriors led 38-14 at halftime.

[ COMING UP ]
Hawaii faces LaTech
Hawaii makes its longest (distance-wise) roadtrip of the season next week, as the Warriors venture to Ruston, La., to meet Louisiana Tech for the first time with the Bulldogs as full-fledged Western Athletic Conference members.
UH will stage in Houston once again, practicing in a relatively friendly area until a day before the game.
Louisiana Tech (3-3, 1-2 WAC) got all it could handle from Texas-El Paso last night, coming from behind to win 38-35.
Luke McCown passed for 328 yards and two touchdowns. He has now thrown for 12,221 career yards.
He and Warriors quarterback Tim Chang matched up as freshmen at Aloha Stadium in 2000, when UH won 27-10 in the schools' only previous meeting. Chang passed for 391 yards and two TDs, while McCown passed for 255 yards and one score.
