Hawaii prep stars impress scouts
A group of 24 Hawaii high school baseball players won a pair of games in a tournament at Peoria, Ariz., yesterday, beating the KC Sluggers (Kan.) 10-2 and Washington Baseball East 5-4. But coach Duane Eldredge cautions that the tournament isn't about wins and losses, it is about getting noticed.
"I think what's nice is several coaches have come up to me asking about some of our kids' backgrounds," Eldredge said. "Without naming names, they are interested in our kids."
Among those drawing the most attention from the college and pro scouts in attendance were pitchers Harrison Kurota, Ryan Kitagawa, Myles Ioane and Ronnie Loeffler. Kanekoa Texiera wowed scouts, among them UH pitching coach Chad Konishi, by hitting between 87 and 92 MPH over four complete innings.
