Petty officer honored
for saving tourist
Petty Officer Charles Sharp has been awarded the U.S. Coast Guard's silver lifesaving medal for rescuing an unconscious tourist who was caught in 12-foot surf at Waimea Bay on Feb. 28. Sharp responded to a cry for help from a boy on the beach and was the first to respond to the woman. He assisted a lifeguard in bringing the victim back to shore, where she was revived and taken to a hospital.

Two Pearl Harbor-based vessels -- the cruiser USS Chosin and the attack submarine USS Pasadena -- last week participated in the largest ever India-U.S. naval exercise off the southwest coast of India. "This exercise is a great opportunity for increasing military cooperation between India and the U.S.," Capt. Edward M. Boorda, commander of the guided-missile cruiser Chosin, told the Associated Press. "It also helps us to fight the global war against terrorism."
The Indian navy deployed two guided-missile frigates, a submarine and a tanker ship for the exercise. The San Diego-destroyer USS Fitzgerald and P-3 Orion subhunters participated in the exercise. The last India-U.S. naval exercises was held in 2002. A series of India-U.S. military exercises began in 1992, but lapsed after Washington imposed military and economic sanctions on India after its nuclear tests in May 1998.
Air Force Maj. Gen. Garry R. Trexler has been promoted to lieutenant general and will become the deputy commander of U.N. Command Korea and deputy commander of U.S. Forces Korea and commander of Air Component Command of South Korea's U.S. Combined Forces Command. He also will serve as commander of the Pacific Air Forces' 7th Air Force. Trexler is currently serving as director of air and space operations at Headquarters Pacific Air Forces at Hickam Air Force Base.
The Newport News Daily Press reported on Friday that Adm. Vernon Clark, the chief of naval operations, said he has no plans to move a carrier group from the East Coast to the Pacific. Clark apparently was responding to statements by retired Adm. Robert Natter, who recommended that the Navy move some of his forces to the Pacific Fleet in May. Natter retired Oct. 3 as head of the Atlantic Fleet. His counterpart in the Pacific, Adm. Walter F. Doran, said on Oct. 1 that the Navy could move an aircraft carrier from the continental United States to Hawaii or Guam to respond more quickly to a crisis in the Asia-Pacific region.
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told Clark that he wanted the Navy to figure out how to enhance its presence globally, the admiral said during a break at the U.S. Naval Institute's Eighth Annual Warfare Exposition and Symposium.
