Big Isle panel to discuss cruise ship traffic boost
The County of Hawaii will hold a public meeting to discuss an increase in cruise ship arrivals in Hilo and Kona for the coming year. The county is seeking to determine the effects of the increase and generate interest in developing events and products for visitors.
The meeting will be held in East Hawaii from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22 at Kilohana Room, Hawaii Naniloa Resort.
In West Hawaii, the meeting will be 5 p.m. Oct. 29 a King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel Ballroom.
A panel of speakers, including harbor agents, cruise ship industry representatives, the Hawaii Tourism Authority, environmentalists and economists will attend.
Nearly 260,000 cruise passengers are expected to stop at Hilo Harbor in 2004, an increase of 30,000 from this year. While the numbers are smaller for Kona, the increases are sizable.

Police nab 3rd fugitive from MidWeek cover
Honolulu police arrested a third fugitive featured in last week's MidWeek cover story on "Hawaii's Most Wanted Fugitives."
Wayne Inouye, 43, who failed to appear at his Aug. 6 sentencing hearing after drug and trespassing convictions, was arrested without incident at 2 p.m. yesterday afternoon, said CrimeStoppers detective Letha DeCaires.
Police received an anonymous call that Inouye was in front of the Ala Moana Center Radio Shack store. DeCaires said when officers went up to talk to him, he denied his identity but finally admitted who he was and was taken into custody.
Two other featured fugitives -- Sun Pangorang, 18, and Karen Eschelbach, 26 -- were arrested last week.
Anyone with information about the fugitives featured in MidWeek or other wanted suspects is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or *CRIME using a cellular phone.
Man dies of injures from single-car crash
A 21-year-old Ewa Beach man died yesterday of injuries suffered when he lost control of his four-door car and struck a light post in the Salt Lake area, police reported.
It was the 63rd traffic fatality this year in Honolulu compared with 50 at the same time last year, police said.
A 17-year-old woman from the Salt Lake area, a passenger in the car, was also seriously injured, police said. Both were taken to the Queen's Medical Center, where the driver died.
The man was traveling south on Ala Napunani Street, north of Ala Puaala Place, at 1:20 a.m. when he "spun out a couple times" and hit the light post, according to the report.
Police said the driver was wearing a seatbelt. Speed was believed to be a factor. It isn't known if drugs or alcohol were involved, they said. It wasn't raining but the road was wet, they said.
Robbery suspect found in massage parlor
A 36-year-old man who allegedly robbed the Central Pacific Bank in Kaheka Daiei yesterday afternoon was arrested almost an hour later at a Keeaumoku Street massage parlor.
Detective Chris Lee said the man handed a note to a bank teller at about 4:15 p.m. demanding $1,000. He then fled on foot with the cash, before signaling a taxi and ending up at the China Spa, at 825 Keeaumoku St., where he was arrested at about 5:10 p.m.
A Daiei store manager gave police the taxi's license plate number, which led to the man's arrest. Police said the man's description was similar to a suspect in another bank robbery case.

2nd suspect arrested in Kona home invasion
Kona police have arrested and charged a second suspect in connection with a September Honaunau home invasion robbery.
Daniel Keliiaa Jr., 39, was charged yesterday afternoon with first-degree burglary, first-degree robbery, kidnapping, second-degree theft and impersonating a police officer after turning himself into police.
He is being held in lieu of $21,000 bail.
On Wednesday, police charged Bobby L. Macomber, 37, in connection with the robbery.
His bail was set at $241,000.
The charges against Keliiaa stem from a Sept. 10 incident in which two armed men, identifying themselves as police officers, forced their way into a home, threw a man to the ground and tied him up with duct tape. They then searched the home, stole cash and valuables and escaped on foot.
