Isle woman is excellent
in ‘Tarzan’

Judging from Sunday's premiere episode of "Tarzan" on WB, the series could be called "Jane." That's because local girl Sarah Wayne Callies, who portrays Jane, had such a huge part in the opener. This version of "Tarzan" is set in the jungle of New York City and Jane is a police detective. Sarah is a Punahou and Dartmouth graduate, who has a master's in fine arts from Denver's National Theatre Conservatory. Not only do we have a very smart young lady here but one who has striking beauty. She is a skilled actress and could easily develop into a major star. Her parents are UH Law Professor David Callies and Valerie Wayne, a UH English prof. "Tarzan" swings into the picture at 9 Sunday nights. ...

As long as people such as Kahauanu Lake are around, groups that play beautiful Hawaiian music will continue to enhance the islands. Three of his protégés -- singer-instrumentalists Pakala Fernandes, Doug Tolentino and Kaipo Kukahiko -- make up the group Pa'ahana." Thirty-five years ago the Kahauanu Lake Trio was a giant force in the Hawaiian music scene. Pa'ahana sounds much like the K-Lake Trio.
