[ UH ATHLETICS ]

Only 3 sports
turned profit
in 2002-03

The Hawaii women's volleyball team made the biggest profit of the three UH athletic teams that had net monetary gains in the 2002-03 fiscal year that ended June 30.

According to unaudited numbers released by UH yesterday, the Rainbow Wahine brought in $1,146,099 while spending $666,467 for a net of $479,632. Coach Dave Shoji's team was also successful on the court, finishing 34-2 and making it to the final four in New Orleans.

The numbers released by UH also projected a $480,472 overall deficit for the athletic department in 2002-03, despite a $1 million loan from the university.

The other programs that made money are football ($265,541) and men's volleyball ($247,910).

UH athletic director Herman Frazier said football actually brought in a higher amount. "That only includes ticket sales and doesn't account for TV and radio (rights fees)," he said.

Football cleared $840,523 in 2001-02. Part of the difference might be explained by the addition of pay-per-view television last season and less attractive home conference games than the previous year.

But home attendance didn't vary much; UH announced 326,208 for nine 2001 home dates and 310,074 for eight in 2002 (not including the Hawaii Bowl, which Frazier said was a wash financially).

Most UH sports, though, were not financial success stories.

"How long do you want to be on the phone?" Frazier said when asked about possible areas for improvement.

The men's basketball team made a $180,009 profit in 2001-02, but spent $179,966 more than it made in 2002-03.

The women's basketball team was the costliest program last year, with a $651,610 deficit. It was also the most expensive in 2001-02 with expenditures overriding revenue by $587,857.

"We'd like to get the baseball numbers up," Frazier said.

Baseball lost $459,006 last year.
