Irons advances at Quicksilver Pro France

HOSSEGOR, France >> Kauai's Andy Irons won his heat yesterday to advance in round three of the Quicksilver Pro France.

Irons, the reigning world champion, outsurfed France's Frederick Robin.

In other highlights, French wild card Patrick Beven eliminated world No. 2 Joel Parkinson, and American Kelly Slater came up with the first 10-point ride of the contest.

No. 15 Seasiders fall at Loyola Marymount

LOS ANGELES >> No. 15 Brigham Young-Hawaii lost 12-6 to No. 9 Loyola Marymount yesterday in collegiate water polo action.

The Seasiders dropped to 7-5 this season following the loss. BYUH All-American Vanja Kalabic scored three goals.

The Seasiders play Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Redlands today in the Claremont Convergence Tournament.

Daglis headlines USPTA Hawaii convention

Tom Daglis, national vice president of the U.S. Professional Tennis Association, will be the keynote speaker at the USPTA Hawaii Division Convention on Oct. 27-28 at Punahou School.

The theme of this year's event is "The Power of Knowledge." For the first time, the Hawaii and San Diego divisions will hold a joint convention.

Also speaking at the convention are Dr. Don Green, BYU-Hawaii coach Dave Porter, Rosie Bareis, Eliot Teltscher, Lee Couillard and Ann Pangan. For more information on the convention, contact Couillard at 944-5835, or e-mail him at lcouillard@punahou.edu.

BYUH No. 4 in NCAA II West volleyball poll

The Brigham Young-Hawaii women's volleyball team is ranked fourth in the first NCAA II West Region poll of the season. The Seasiders, the defending national champions, are 10-2 overall and 8-2 against other teams in the region.

Chaminade (7-4, 6-2) is ranked sixth and Hawaii Pacific seventh (10-2, 7-1). UC San Diego (14-2, 12-2) is No. 1.

The poll is used to determine invitations and seedings in the NCAA Division II tournament.

BYUH's Tabuse scores 7 for Nuggets

DENVER >> Brigham Young-Hawaii product Yuta Tabuse had seven points in just 11 minutes last night as his Denver Nuggets won a 113-100 NBA preseason exhibition over the Phoenix Suns.

Tabuse was 3-for-5 from the field with three rebounds and three assists. But the story of the game was 19 points from rookie Carmelo Anthony, who scored 19 points in his Denver debut.

If he makes the final cut, Tabuse, who played at BYUH during the 2000-01 season, would be the first Japanese player in the NBA. He was the Japan league's Super Best Rookie last season.
