Waianae workshops to tackle drug abuse

Cultural and wellness approaches to prevent drug abuse will be the subject of workshops and activities in Waianae sponsored by the Asian Pacific American Women's Leadership Institute.

The institute's Discovery Leadership Fellows will host "Ho'i I Ka 'Oia'i'o" from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow at Waianae District Park at 85-601 Farrington Highway.

The event will feature educational workshops, informational booths and a public hearing by the Legislative Ice Abatement Task Force.

The community will also be able to voice its concerns during the public hearing.

Traditional Hawaiian methods of health and healing will be highlighted, including ho'oponopono (peaceful conflict resolution), lomilomi (massage therapy) and hi'uwai (ritual cleansing) along with Western methods of substance abuse treatment and prevention.

Speakers include former Circuit Judge Thomas Kaulukukui, Hawaiian healer Helen O'Connor, who specializes in lomilomi and hiu'wai, and Hawaiian tattoo artist Keoni Nunes.

Police arrested a second Honolulu fugitive featured in this week's MidWeek in Kaimuki Wednesday night following tips to CrimeStoppers.

Karen Eschelbach, 26, was arrested at a home on Koko Head Avenue at 7:10 p.m. A 34-year-old man wanted on an outstanding traffic warrant was also arrested.

Eschelbach was wanted on a $50,000 bench warrant for failing to comply with terms of her supervised release in an auto theft case and on a $25,000 grand jury warrant for assault and refusing an order to stop a motor vehicle.

Anyone with information about a fugitive is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or *CRIME by cellular telephone.

Police seek suspect in Ala Moana bank heist

Police are searching for a man who robbed American Savings Bank's Ala Moana branch about 5 p.m. yesterday.

The suspect stood in line at the bank and handed the teller a demand note, which said he was armed.

The man fled, and was last seen running in the Ewa direction on the roadway in the parking lot on the makai side of the shopping center.

The suspect is described as a man in his late 20s, 5 feet 4 inches tall, 180 pounds, clean-shaven, with a husky build, short dark neck-length hair, brown eyes, and wearing a light-colored button-down shirt and black pants.

Nine people arrested in Big Isle drug raids

Big Island police arrested nine people for various drug offenses after searching three houses over the past week in east Hawaii.

On Wednesday, officers arrested a 45-year-old man at an Ainako Drive house in Hilo after finding heroin, crystal methamphetamine, methadone and OxyContin. Officers also seized a 9mm rifle with a silencer and a scope, 24 marijuana plants, dried marijuana and $2,410 in cash.

Police also arrested five Oahu Road suspects in the Nanawale Estates subdivision in Puna after discovering a methamphetamine laboratory inside a home and a laboratory outside.

On Saturday, officers arrested three Hawaiian Beaches men at a Hawaiian Acres subdivision in Puna, where they found an indoor greenhouse marijuana cultivation operation.

Police recovered 2,911 marijuana plants.

Fatalities identified in N. Kona car crash

Police have identified three men killed Tuesday night in a single-car crash on Hawaii Belt Road near the 22-mile marker at Puuanahulu in North Kona.

They are the driver of the vehicle, Zachary Reed, 21, of Kailua-Kona, and passengers John Roth, 44, of Kaloa, North Kona, and Robert McNair, 32, of Kailua-Kona.
