The Germans are here,
plus the Austrians

WITH "Ah-nold" monopolizing the news in "Cauli-fornia," the Germans seem to be everywhere. Peter Birnbaum, former owner of Beethoven's Fifth, Kaiser Wilhelm, Peter's Alpine House and the Sugar Bar, flew in from the Molokai home he shares with his longtime fraulein, Tammy, to do the chicken dance with her at the annual Oktoberfest at the Ala Moana Hotel. Two nights in a row. You can take the German out of Germany ...

IN his e-mail newsletter, Ian Lind passes on sad news from Seattle where former United Public Workers official Max Roffman has died at 93. He and then-UPW director Henry Epstein ran things until a kind of coup put Gary Rodrigues in the driver's seat. Under Roffman and Epstein, recalls Lind, "The union hall was used for meetings or community groups, and they were active and visible in social causes and organization, giving labor a much broader reach than it claims today." ...

ONE of the leaders in the heavy-metal music movement, Kirk Hammett, was recognized by a number of diners when he and his wife went Italian at Auntie Pasto's Beretania. Hammett is best known as a guitarist for Metallica ...

Gouda for them

BACK when Sansei and Vino on Maui owner D.K. Kodama and wife Lori had their first child nearly two years ago, they must have had restaurants on their minds, because they named her Brie. At least it wasn't Gorgonzola was the reaction here. Well, the Kodamas are expecting again, a boy this time. So they've already picked out a name that follows in Brie's cheese vein, so to speak. It'll be Chev. Not short for Chevrolet, but for Chevre ...

APPEARING on the Brickwood Galuteria TV show, "Hawaii's Kitchen," airing Sunday will be Bob Longhi. He's long had Maui's most popular eatery and now has opened a beautiful Longhi's in Ala Moana Center. He kept Brickwood in stitches while turning out such items as Pasta Putana, and autographed for him a copy of his well-named book, "Longhi's -- Recipes and Reflections from Maui's Most Opinionated Restaurateur." ...

HERE'S a novel way to both get and get rid of the blues tomorrow. The Mental Health Association is holding a "Beyond the Blues" festival at Ala Moana Center Stage from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There'll be blues performers such as Adam Kaiser, West Delta, Tiki Taboo and Boogie but there are ways to combat the blues as well. There'll be displays by artists with mental illness, wellness screenings and experts such as Dr. Gloria Neumann of the Hawaii Psychological Association to give talks on topics such as how to recognized the signs of depression ...

Apple a day

IF you passed the Apple Store at Ala Moana Center and spotted dozens of tykes dressed in Maryknoll School uniforms, you saw the first ever "Night at the Apple Store." Those who dropped in could see the grade-schoolers presenting various school projects to astound them and parents alike. Seems the computer technology has placed "An apple a day..." into the trash bin ...
