Oceanic introducing sports
and other cable channels

Oceanic Time Warner Cable of Hawaii is planning to add new channels and packages, following its major channel realignment Sept. 3.

"We are planning to launch a sports tier," said Norman Santos, vice president for operations.

"We have sports all over the place, but it's kind of getting to the point where just layering these things onto everybody's channel lineup doesn't work."

Effective Nov. 3, NBA-TV, featuring basketball; The Tennis Channel; and FUEL, featuring nonmainstream sports, will be offered to cable subscribers for an additional $2.95 a month.

Customers with high-definition TV sets can opt for two channels of high-definition formatted general entertainment, such as movies and sports for an extra $6.95 a month. The programming is coming from In-Demand, Oceanic's pay-per-view movie supplier.

"We're also planning additions to our regular analog lineup," Santos said. "Outdoor Life" differs from "The Outdoor Channel," with programming not as focused on hunting and fishing as on cycling and "things you do with family."

ESPN Classic will televise historic sports, both college and professional, but Santos said it will also show "instant classics," or recent games destined to become legendary events.

"There's one other channel we're still talking about," but it's not a sure thing so Santos declined to name it. The analog additions will be made Dec. 31.
