Rainbow Wahine hitting
the road for WAC games
The Hawaii women's soccer team continues its trek through the Western Athletic Conference with road matches at Nevada tomorrow and Boise State on Sunday.
The Rainbow Wahine are 3-1 at the halfway point of the league schedule and can assure themselves of at least a second-place finish by winning their final four conference matches.
"Nevada is not doing well and Boise State has struggled but had a tremendous win over San Jose State (4-2) last weekend," UH coach Pinsoom Tenzing said.
Hawaii (8-4-1) won its first two conference road matches in September and is 4-1-1 away from the islands this season. However, Tenzing is wary of the Wahine becoming overconfident since this week's foes have losing records.
"I don't sense any over confidence, but this is something we deal with all the time to make sure it doesn't happen." Tenzing said.
Nevada (2-9, 0-2) was shut out by San Jose State and Fresno State last weekend. The Wolf Pack have scored just six goals in 11 matches and been blanked in their last three. The two Nevada victories came the first week of September against Northern Arizona and Pacific.
Kristin Anderson has scored three of Nevada's six goals. Also starting for the Wolf Pack are Kaula Rowe, a senior striker from Kamehameha, and Leisha Makinano, a senior defender from Iolani.
Boise State (4-8-1, 1-1) split its series in Northern California, losing to Fresno State before picking up the win at SJSU.
"The Broncos have Brittany Zoellner, Abbe Roche and Megan McCoy and they all can be troublesome," Tenzing said.
All three are midfielders and Zoellner leads the Broncos with seven goals and one assist.
Liane Tom, a freshman midfielder from Mililani, started the first six matches for Boise State but suffered a badly sprained left ankle and won't be able to play against UH.
Notes: Midfielder Seline Williams has a strained left hamstring and will not make the trip. Defender Ashley Chaffin will take her place on the UH roster. ... Wahine goalkeeper Mahie Atay, who has a strained groin and bruised left thigh, will make the trip, but her playing status will be a game-time decision. ... UH is 3-0 all time vs. Nevada and 2-1-1 vs. Boise State. ... The Wahine play a nonconference match at Idaho State on Monday.
