Kai, Chow receive WAC honors

Hawaii striker Natasha Kai and goalkeeper Erin Chow have been named the Western Athletic Conference women's soccer offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively.

Kai, a sophomore from Kahuku, earned her second player of the week honor (Sept. 15), with eight points in two conference matches, scoring three goals on four shots on goal. Kai had one goal and assisted on another in the Rainbow Wahine's 4-3 loss to SMU. She then tallied two more goals and an assist in a 3-0 win over UTEP.

Chow, a junior from Honolulu, came in at halftime against SMU, in relief of Mahie Atay, who was injured. The halftime score of 4-3 stood, as Chow allowed no goals in the loss. She continued her shutout, allowing no goals against UTEP in a 3-0 win. She tallied eight saves in 107 minutes.

4 qualify for Turtle Bay Championship

Also receiving exemptions were Jack Spradlin, Peter Martin and Lonnie Nielson, who survived a three-way playoff to determine the fourth slot after shooting an even-par 72.

Former baseball pitcher Rick Rhoden and LPGA golfer Jan Stephenson also have received sponsor exemptions for this week's tournament, with Stephenson being the first professional women's golfer to play in a men's Championship Tour event.
