Everyone’s a German
during Oktoberfest

SO what German did the Ala Moana Hotel get to emcee the oldest and largest Oktoberfest last night. Since Arnold Schwartze-negger was otherwise engaged, and is Austrian, anyway, the hotel signed up another couple of ersatz "Ich bin ein Berliner" emcees, Lanai and Augie of Rhythm 98.5 Radio. The two may not be talked into wearing liederhosen, but they'll happily tap the keg to get the beer drinking and oom-pah dancing underway. This is the 33rd year that the Edelweiss Band has performed and Lanai and Augie will lead the inevitable "chicken dance" in the Hibiscus Ballroom. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the fun runs through Sunday ...

IT was both a visual and aural delight when Miss Hawaii 1997 Erika Kauffman sang "When I Fall in Love" with the Betty Loo Taylor trio at the Verandah of the Kahala Mandarin Friday night. The eye-ful tower of talent was such a hit that Betty Loo invited her to do a second song, a rarity there I'm told. Erika will do her regular Wednesday night performance tomorrow at the Hanohano Room and will return there on Saturday to share the stage with another of my favorites, the multi-talented Rocky Brown, another beauty who has a way with a song ...

Public TV revisited

BACK at the University of Georgia where he's media producer/director is David Silvian. I hadn't seen him for 30 years since he left the islands, and he's sad that there's so little original programming coming out of KHET these days, especially since he was instrumental in producing so much. Looking back, he e-mails, "As I get up in years and look back on my years in Hawaii I get very good vibes in what we all did, a lot of great community TV. To me, that is what public TV is all about. I yearn for those days to return ..." After a lunch we had at Breakfast, Lunch and Crab, I insisted Silvian's wife taste sashimi. Later he asked how she liked it. She said it tasted good, but she wished it had been kept in the sauce longer. How much longer, he asked. Her reply: "All day." ...

PSYCHIATRIST and sometime actor ("ART" at The Actor's Group) Dr. Mark Stitham had dinner last week at Roy's with director friends Kyle Rankin and Efram Potelle. He'd been in a couple of independently made short subjects the two made before heading off for Hollywood. While Dr. Stitham spends most of his time in the office, only occasionally doing a stage role, Rankin and Potelle have won national awards and their film, "The Battle of Shaker Heights," is playing around the county, though not in Honolulu yet. The two told Stitham they love Hawaii and would like to make a feature here some day ...

Dying to be on stage?

SORRY for the late notice, but excellent educator and actor Richard MacPherson is teaching a six week course at Windward Community College which takes either actors or newcomers though the process of creating a character. The theme revolves around death, but the classes are lively. Students meet Tuesday and Thursday at the Windward Little Theater beginning tonight. The cost is $175, and you can enroll by calling 235-7433 ...
