Siul, Markowicz win Niketown race

Michael Siul was the top male finisher and Kristen Markowicz the top female finisher in the fourth annual Niketown 5K in Waikiki.

Siul's time of 15:48 was the fastest among the record 5,000 participants that took part in the event, which raised $79,000 that will go toward local schools. Markowicz finished in 17:57.

Among the 5,000 participants, over 500 were from Ma'ema'e school, which had the most representation in the race for schools for the fourth year in a row.

Chaminade continues to sweep

Kahala Kabalis and Valasi Sepulona each put down 12 kills to lead the Silverswords to their fourth consecutive sweep, this time over Montana State-Billings 30-27, 30-21, 30-26.

Sepulona added 12 digs and Kalae Araujo 11 for the Silverswords, who outhit MSU-Billings .245 to .096.

Chaminade improved to 7-4 for the season and 2-0 in Pacific West play. Their next game is tonight against Western New Mexico. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at McCabe Gym.

Maui Invitational tickets to go on sale

All-day tickets to the 2003 EA Sports Maui Invitational basketball tournament go on sale at noon Friday. Tickets will be available at Anthony's Coffee in Paia, Napili Plaza, Kaahumanu Center and Maui Tacos in Kihei or with a surcharge at Foodland locations statewide. All-day reserved seats are $60. General admission tickets are $40.

Basketball officials needed

Those interested in officiating basketball games for the 2003-04 season should attend the Oct. 13 general membership meeting of the State Association of Basketball Officials.
