The Royal Order
of Kamehameha I
celebrates its centennial
CINDY ELLEN RUSSELL / CRUSSELL@STARBULLETIN.COM
Edward Akana, Ernest Ka'opua Kaneha'ilua, James Kaliloa Viado and Tin Hu Young of the Royal Order of Kamehameha I gave the sign to the Kamehameha Tomb at the Royal Mausoleum yesterday. The Royal Order of Kamehameha I was founded by King Kamehameha V, but was pushed underground when the monarchy was overthrown in 1893 and was considered seditious. In 1903, Prince Kuhio held a dramatic ceremony at the Kamehameha Statue that re-established the Royal Order of Kamehameha I, Chapter 1, and reorganized the Hawaiian Royal Societies. Since April of this year, the Royal Order has honored and celebrated this 100-year anniversary, which culminated with a visit to the Royal Mausoleum.
