Widening H-1 freeway
among topics at meeting

How wide can you make the freeway?

That and other questions will be answered at 7 p.m. Oct. 22 at Pearl Ridge Elementary School during a community meeting sponsored by Sen. Cal Kawamoto, Senate Transportation Committee chairman.

Appearing at the meeting will be Rod Haraga, state transportation director, who will discuss proposals to widen the H-1 freeway.

No charges against Tam

The state Ethics Commission says it's not going to pursue formal charges against City Councilman Rod Tam for what the commission says were violations of the state ethics code committed last year while Tam was a state senator.

The commission, which did not name Tam in an advisory opinion, began the inquiry after Tam issued two news releases on economic issues on Senate letterhead that also included references to his run for the City Council.

Shortly after the second release, former Gov. Ben Cayetano criticized Tam for the unauthorized use of a Cabinet member's name in Tam's release. Seiji Naya, then the director of the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, was listed jointly with Tam on the release.

The commission charged Tam with misusing his legislative position for campaign purposes and misusing state resources.

Tam responded to the commission's charges by saying that his news release was not intended to further his City Council candidacy.

But the commission decided not to pursue formal proceedings against Tam because the actions were not "sufficiently egregious" to warrant a formal hearing.
