H-2 closed to examine
scene of fatal crash

Police closed four lanes of the H-2 Freeway in the northbound direction near the Pineapple Road overpass in Mililani yesterday afternoon as traffic investigators tried to determine the cause of a fatal motorcycle crash.

The accident occurred at 4:32 p.m. and the freeway was reopened shortly after 7:30 p.m.

Police said the 30-year-old driver of a 2002 Suzuki motorcycle was speeding when he changed lanes and struck the right rear of a pickup truck.

The man was taken to Wahiawa General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Marine Corps Base Hawaii officials said a sailor attached to the Marine Air Group 2 died yesterday in a motorcycle accident. The sailor's name is being withheld while officials attempt to contact next of kin.

The driver of the pick-up truck, a 57-year-old man, and his 19-year-old passenger were unhurt.

Police said it is unknown whether alcohol played a role in the collision or if the motorcycle driver was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. There was no helmet found at the scene.
