Workers go to hospital after Kauai acid spill
LIHUE >> A chemical spill in Lihue Friday sent three workers to the hospital and closed Ahukini Road for several hours.
The workers operating a bulldozer apparently broke open a one-gallon plastic container filled with hydrochloric acid left in a large pile of trash at the Lihue Transfer Station, the fire department said.
The hazardous materials unit responded to the spill, which was reported at about 8:52 a.m. Hydrochloric acid is used to clean concrete. The three employees who were exposed to the chemical were taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital and released. The transfer station reopened at about 3:30 p.m.
