He was a ‘great
friend to HGEA’


Charles Yasuichi "Charley" Shigemura showed leadership when the Hawaii Government Employees Association needed it, HGEA Executive Director Russell K. Okata says.

"Charley Shigemura was a great friend to HGEA, and me. He was always there when the union or I needed him," Okata said.

Shigemura,, 83, of Aiea, a retired city fiscal officer and longtime HGEA officer, died Sept. 30, 2003, in Straub Clinic & Hospital.

Okata recalled that Shigemura would sometimes disagree with longtime leader David Trask.

"But their disagreements always resulted in the union moving forward. Charlie was always looking to make the union better," he said.

Shigemura had served as board director, treasurer and vice president of the government white-collar workers union.

He was born in Honolulu. He is survived by wife Mildred I., son Neal Y., daughter Charmille R. Abe, brother James Y., sisters Amy M. Murai and Muriel T. Omiya and two grandchildren. Services: 6 p.m. Wednesday at Hosoi Garden Mortuary. Call after 5 p.m. Casual attire. No flowers.
