Oahu grand jury indicts
2 people in ID theft case
An Oahu grand jury indicted two people yesterday for allegedly stealing the identity of former Honolulu attorney Harold S. Wright and trying to transfer money and stock from his accounts.
Shawn B. McKay was charged with first-degree identity theft; fraud; second-degree forgery; first-degree theft; first-degree attempted theft; second-degree theft and money laundering. His ex-wife Ching Hui Wang, also known as Candy Wang or Candy McKay, was charged with first-degree identity theft and money laundering.
Deputy Prosecutor Randy Lee said McKay and Wang opened accounts at TD Waterhouse Investor Services Inc. and Raymond James Financial Services Inc. under Wright's name without his knowledge.
Lee said the two attempted to transfer $31,000 from one of Wright's accounts and transferred $500,000 worth of stock from another of his accounts, but were unable to gain control of the stock.
Lee said Wright, 85, became aware of the transactions when the couple opened an account at the financial services company where Wright already had an account.
Officials inquired about two different addresses under Wright's name and he informed them he hadn't changed his address.
The transactions, from July 1 to Aug. 31, 2002, were stopped.
McKay's bail was set at $500,000 and Wang's bail was set at $50,000.
