Lady Seasiders fall in poll despite success

The Brigham Young University-Hawaii women's volleyball team dropped from second to third in the American Volleyball Coaches Association national poll released yesterday.

The slip occured despite the Lady-Seasiders sweeping both matches they played this week and garnering eight first-place votes, three more than last week. BYUH received 789 points, 29 fewer than last week.

Cal State-San Bernardino, thanks to a narrow 3-2 win at home over previous No. 1 UC-San Diego, jumped from third to first. The Coyotes received 23 first-place votes and 858 points to take over the top spot from the Tritons, who are second after receiving 822 points but only three first-place votes.

Barry received the only other first-place vote and is 10 points behind BYUH.

Hawaii Pacific received 483 votes to move up from 14th to 11th.

Hawaii sixth at Ron Moore Classic

The Hawaii men's golf team moved up three points after a final-round 294 to finish in a tie for sixth in the Ron Moore Classic hosted by the University of Denver.

The Warriors finished the 12-team, 54-hole tourney with a total of 888.

Senior Matt Kodama led UH with a tie for eighth in the individual leaderboard after a 3-under final round put him at even par (216) for the tourney.

Colorado State cruised to the team title by 10 strokes with a two-day total of 850 (-14). Nolan Maden was the individual medallist for the Rams, finishing with a 12-under 264 to win by three strokes.

Saint Louis hires another coach

Geoffrey Garvin has been named Saint Louis School track and field coach by athletic director Todd Los Banos.

Garvin was captain of the California State University-Chico track and field team and an All-American in 1993. He holds a bachelor's degree in Recreation Administration and is completing his teaching certification K-12 Physical Education at the University of Hawaii.

Garvin comes from Iolani where he was sprint coach and assistant cross-country coach.

Honolulu Marathon champ dead at 33

Three-time Honolulu Marathon champion Benson Masya died Sept. 24 at 33, according to fellow Kenyan Cosmas Ndeti, winner of three Boston Marathons.

Ndeti, a close friend, gave no cause of death but said Masya had been ailing for some time. He added that the funeral would be held Saturday in Kitui, Kenya.

Masya won the Honolulu Marathon on his first try in 1991, while working as a postal worker. He defended his title the following year and cruised to victory in 1994.

HPU has NFCA All-American Scholar-Athletes

Hawaii Pacific softball players Alisa Iloreta, Anuhea Diamond and Kimberlie Fukumoto, were named to the 2003 National Fast Pitch Coaches Association All-American Scholar-Athlete Team.

Iloreta, a four-year utility player from Wailua, Kauai, received a bachelor of arts degree in psychology with a 3.54 gpa.

Diamond, an underclassmen catcher from Mililani, is a visual communications major and maintains a 3.64 gpa.

Fukumoto, a three-year letterwinner from Flagstaff, Ariz., received a bachelor of arts degree in psychology with a 3.91 gpa.

Islanders win af2 marketing award

The Hawaiian Islanders have been named the organization with the best marketing plan for the 2003 season by arenafootball2.

The af2 award was based on each organization's ability to implement and execute a marketing plan. The Islanders established a new marketing strategy, a weekly television show and revamped the team's uniforms.

On the field, the Islanders went 11-7 and averaged more than 3,400 fans per game in their second season in af2.

Goodwill Games basketball coaches clinic set

University of Hawaii basketball coaches Riley Wallace and Vince Goo, Chaminade's Aaron Griess and Russell Dung from Hawaii Pacific headline the Hawaii International Youth Goodwill Games basketball coaches clinic on Oct. 11.

The clinic is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Damien Memorial High gym. Also on staff are Larry Doty of Linfield College and former Brigham Young-Hawaii coach Chic Hess. For more information, call Hess at 263-3310 or e-mail him at hichess@hawaii.rr.com.

The BIKEFACTORY Haleiwa Triathlon is scheduled for Nov. 1.

Free speed clinic offered by batting cage

Ohana Batting Cages in Aiea is sponsoring a free speed clinic for junior and adult athletes on Oct. 4.

Tools and techniques offered will be applicable for a wide range of sports, including football, baseball, volleyball and soccer, as well as track, tennis, basketball and other activities. The clinic runs from 1-3 p.m. For more information, call 486-4487.
