Fire burns 200 acres in lower Puna area
HILO >> A brush fire burned about 200 acres in the lower Puna area south of Hilo yesterday, but officials said they hoped to contain it without damage to homes.
The fire of unknown origin was reported at 12:48 p.m. in an uninhabited area between Black Sands subdivision and the Kalapana-Pahoa Highway, said Civil Defense head Troy Kindred.
Two helicopters, a bulldozer and more than two dozen firefighters battled the blaze. High humidity and' drizzle slowed the fire considerably, and officials said they hoped to contain it last night, Kindred said.
