A corny kinda day

Does the idea of sweet corn ice cream intrigue you?

Jim Brewbaker at the University of Hawaii's College of Tropical Agriculture & Human Resources is working on a batch for Saturday's Corn Field Day at the Waimanalo Research Station.

If he's successful, you'll be able to get a taste, as well as get free samples of corn to munch on and carry home. They've got 12,000 ears of supersweet hybrids available.

Chef Alfredo Cabacungan of Kapiolani Community College and his students will prepare southeast Asian dishes using corn. Corn cookbooks and flyers will be available.

For those interested in growing as well as eating, seeds will be given away, and exhibits will cover many aspects of the corn biz. Brewbaker's "Corn Production in the Tropics -- The Hawaiian Experience" will be sold.

The 16th-annual Corn Field Day takes place 9 a.m. to noon at the facility at 41-698 Ahiki St. (mauka of Waimanalo Park off Hihimanu Street.)

Call 259-7201.

The raw truth

The pluses and minuses of a diet of raw plant foods will be discussed at the October meetings of the Vegetarian Society of Hawaii on Maui and Oahu.

Harris, a vegetarian since 1950 and vegan since 1963, is director of the Kaiser Permanente Vegetarian Lifestyle Clinic in Honolulu and a retired emergency physician. He is the author of "The Scientific Basis of Vegetarianism."

The lecture will be held at 7 p.m. next Wednesday at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Kahului, Maui, and at 7 p.m. Oct. 11 at McCoy Pavilion, Ala Moana Park. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. Call 944-VEGI.
