One of these losers
will finally win
THE ever-hopeful baseball fans in Chicago and Boston are daring to ask, "Might this be the year?" The Red Sox came within an out in recent playoff memory of winning it all, and one lifetime Sox fan was watching with some local pals who started congratulating him on the win just a tad early. "Not yet," he protested as one who knows the meaning of close but no cigar, and at that moment a ground ball to first went through Bill Buckner's legs and another "L" was posted in the paper. As for the Cubbies, Chicagoans are more realistic, knowing they're being eternally tested by God and certain they'll find a way to lose. They won their last World Series in 1908, once prompting Cubs broadcaster Jack Brickhouse into ho-humming, "Everyone's entitled to a bad century now and then." ...
AND while we're on the subject of sports, a betting man, seeing the red-hot Oregon Ducks featured on the cover of last week's Sports Illustrated, might have considered the "S.I. cover jinx" is still in effect and bet against them. They were like Ducks in a blind, falling right and left to the Washington State sharpshooters as they were soundly dispensed with 55 to 12 ...

Top notch entertainers Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom, Brothers Cazimero and Kimo Kahoano, donated their time and talent ... The 17th season of the Honolulu Polo Club in Waimanalo began June 8 and the season ender is Oct. 12 with the Colin Ogawa Memorial Cup ...
DON'T wish for it, but the Waikiki Trade Center may be one of the safest places to have a heart attack. The Trade Center Property Manager, after seeing Emme Tomimbang's recently re-aired show about how an Automated External Defibrillator saved the life of Police Chief Lee Donahue, had an AED installed on the premises and produced an all-day training course in CPR for the security and management staff. They're now offering the same training to all the building tenants ...
Dog day afternoon
IF you tune in the made-over Sharon Osbourne's new TV show airing Monday on KHNL, you should see her good friend Duane "Dog" Chapman, the bounty hunter who captured the Max Factor heir, Andrew Luster, being interviewed. He and companion Beth Smith are also pictured on Playboy's Web site as guests at Hugh Hefner's mansion. And Smith is also being trailed by a German TV crew for a special on female bounty hunters ...
