Each were warriors
in their own way

MEDIA inundated Punchbowl Sunday to cover the 60th anniversary commemoration of the 100th Battalion's entry into combat in World War II. But most missed a smaller gathering just up the hill where 30 or so family friends and former staff gathered at the grave of late Congresswoman Patsy Mink, who died a year ago Sunday ...

ON view Oct. 16 to Jan. 4 at the Academy of Arts is an extensive collection of what you and I can only dream of -- the jewelry of heiress Doris Duke. This is not just the latest bauble by Tiffany, mind you. Duke inherited Victorian heirloom jewelry as well as other jewels of 19th and early 20th Century America, and the largest of five sections is devoted to her collection of Indian jewelry ...

"Ragtime" time

THOSE who've seen the staged works of Mary Gutzi are aware they're seeing something special, and so it is with "Ragtime," the musical based on the E.L. Doctorow book of the same name, which opened last week at Diamond Head Theatre. It's simply a wonderfully acted and sung work, full of both joy and sorrow, carefully crafted by Gutzi, who also plays a major role in the musical along with the wonderful Jerold E. Solomon and Crystal Williams, fresh from the national tour of the show, a Tony-winner in New York. Gutzi is able to elevate the performances of a host of local actors such as Douglas Scheer, Mary Chestnut Hicks and Buz Tennent, so there's no fall-off of talent. And DHT artistic director John Rampage did some very creative choreography and even the costuming was exemplary. It's little wonder the show has already been extended through Oct. 19. It wouldn't surprise me if they further extended it ...

SPEAKING of actors, attorney David Farmer has been nominated for the Mea No'eau Awards for his role as the mountain climber who asks a guru at the top the meaning of life. It's for Cutter Ford and Farmer came on like Harrison Ford. The gala presentation of awards will take place at the Academy of Arts Theater on Nov. 8, as part of the Hawai'i International Film Festival ... Farmer also has a principal role in an independent film, "Cry for the Gods," which stars Donalyn Delacruz, who's left KHON to pursue an acting career ...

Solid "Liquid"

SUDDENLY a major player in local TV production is Liquid Planet Studios. For starters, they're providing equipment and production needs for "American Idol" in Hawaii. Owners Ted Jung Jr. and Ruben Carrillo are understandably excited about what's on their production plate. They're shooting six episodes of national programs "A Wedding Story" and "A Makeover Story," both to air on TLC. The company has completed work on four episodes of "Merge" for Lifetime, as well as "Bikini Destinations." They've also completed a week of "54321" for Fox SportsNet and several "E! True Hollywood Stories" segments. Productions include "Emme's Island Moments," "The June Jones Show" and the upcoming Ray Bumatai improv game, "Mental Tilapia." These producers are keeping busy ...
