Seasiders drop match ... and in water polo poll
STANFORD, Calif. >> All-American Tony Azevedo scored eight goals to lead defending national champion Stanford to a 16-8 victory over Brigham Young-Hawaii in a men's water polo match yesterday.
Seasider All-American Vanja Kalabic was held to two goals on 10 shots. Also scoring two goals for BYUH (2-1) were Mike Rieben, Keith Mitchell and Vlada Stankovic.
Also, the Seasiders slipped a spot to 18th in the national poll released yesterday. Ranked No. 1 is Southern California (6-0).
BYUH continues its roadtrip at No. 4 California today.
Harding wins Ms. Fitness USA title
Sarah Harding, a Punahou School graduate, was named the Nautilus 2004 Ms. Fitness USA earlier this month in Las Vegas.
Harding, who competed in gymnastics for Stanford, edged runner-up Tiffany Yee of Colorado 213.0-213.1 in the meet held at the Rio Hotel on Sept. 12. On Sept. 13, Harding finished third at the Ms. Fitness World competition, placing behind Karen Elliott of Washington state and Poland's Kamila Porzcyk.
Harding will represent the U.S. in another international competition scheduled for next month in Poland.
Kawano named coach for Pan-Am Cadet boxing
Bruce Kawano of Pearl City is in Mexico City this week, representing USA Boxing as a coach at the 2003 Pan-American Cadet Championships.
The championships, which run through Sunday, are conducted under Amateur International Boxing Association rules.
