Lost in the stars
and over the moon
THE horrorscope story about star-gazer and "reader" Alice Inoue that ran Monday has stirred a lot of pots. Anagrammarian Mike Morton opines, "Everyone thinks every horoscope applies to them." As befits his hobby he adds that the letters in "Alice Inoue" rearrange to spell "Leo -- i.e. UN! CIA! But I wouldn't read too much into that." With Titantic thoughts, all I could come up with was "A Celine IOU." ... Daily reader Mary Moore e-mails, "I agree with you that astrology's a crock and could hardly be called 'scientific.' Those astrological 'profiles' are full of characteristics from which anyone could extrapolate elements that applied to their personality. Does that make me a 'curmudgeon' too?" Not in my book, Mary ...
MOORE further writes that yesterday was the autumnal equinox and recalls listening to me when I was a disc jockey on K-POI more than 40 years ago and told listeners the meaning of "equinox" in Latin. "Equus" means horse and "nox" is night, she reports my saying, so equinox means "night-mare." "I think I was only 12 years old at the time," Moore writes, but I thought that was a very clever play on words and I quote you every time the word comes up. People always chuckle over it." I have no idea today if it's accurate, but if it gets a chuckle it's worth it. ...
Geezers and wheezers
HANK'S Cafe Honolulu was packed the other night, and not just because of the country music being played by the Geezers. Most folks were celebrating Hank Taaufasau and his softball team destroying the Leftovers on the diamond 16-3. That's a pretty good win, especially when -- like Hank's team -- you were 0-24 going into the game ...
WHEN James Deering, hotel director for Norwegian Cruise Line, appeared on the Perry & Price Hanohano Room radio show to drum up interest in yesterday's Job Fair at the Blaisdell, he announced he was looking for thousands of future cruise-ship employees. And when Larry Price learned that a server on the cruise ship can make $3,000 a month with all expenses paid, three months on and one month off, he didn't exactly volunteer, but predicted a lot of bus drivers would show up ...
THE silent auction that's part of "Caper," the Hawaii Theatre fund-raiser Oct. 4 at Neiman Marcus is shaping up. HFC board member Judy Perry, who heads Merrill Lynch, has come up with an item that will bring Bullish bids. It includes a dinner at her home with a painting class for the winner --complete with nude model. Talk about Capers! ...
Sardines and Vino?
MASTER Wine Sommelier Chuck Furuya is a consultant to D.K. Kodama at his new Vino restaurant in Kapalua, Maui, and was thrilled when Burt Cutino, owner of the famous Sardine Factory Restaurant in Monterey, Calif., dined there. "Not only does the Sardine Factory have one of America's great wine lists," exudes Furuya, "it was there I passed the Master Sommelier exam." At one time there were only 12 Master Sommeliers in the U.S. and Hawaii had two -- Richard Dean of the Third Floor -- now in N.Y. -- was the other ...
