Wastewater Branch lets applicants check online
The Wastewater Branch of the state Department of Health is now electronically linked to the city's building permit office at the Department of Planning and Permitting.
By logging on to dppweb.co.honolulu.hi.us/Dppweb/ and clicking on "building permits," applicants can track building permit applications as they go through the system.
The online service has already been available within the city permitting process.
Permits are tracked by application number, building permit number, address or tax map key number.
Applicants may be able to go online to determine which agency or office has completed their review and whether any agency has comments that need to be addressed.
The online service helps the city and the Wastewater Branch better respond to inquiries about the status of building permit applications.
Approvals by the Wastewater Branch will also be done electronically.
Building permit applications must still be routed to the Wastewater Branch at 919 Ala Moana, Room 309.
For more information, call the Wastewater Branch at 586-4294.

Makakilo house burns; pastor and family safe
A Makakilo house fire early yesterday morning caused $275,000 in damage and left a Baptist pastor and his family homeless.
Kahua Baptist Church Pastor Les Lippincott and one of his sons were on a paper route when the fire started at 3:15 a.m. Lippincott's three other children and wife, Kathy, escaped the fire with no injuries.
"The mother heard popping and cracking from the fire," said Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Emmit Kane. "Considering the time of the morning, when most people are in their deepest sleep at that time, it's really fortunate how Mom was able to be aroused."
Thirty-five firefighters responded, bringing the fire at the four-bedroom home under control by 4:53 a.m.
A neighboring home was also slightly damaged by the fire.
Kane said the cause of the fire is still under investigation and is not believed to be suspicious. He said the fire probably started in the patio area.
The American Red Cross and neighbors provided shelter, food and clothing for the family.

He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and was taken to the Queen's Medical Center with head injuries.
Police said alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.
