1969: If Ala Moana store’s
shoe sale fits, go buy a pair

THE ad for Robins in Ala Moana Center that announced a "Big Shoe Sale" prompted one gal we know to say, "Too bad. I only wear a size 5." ... Bob Hope sent out publicity postcards of his upcoming TV special to critics across the country, and all were marked "postage due 1 cent." Too bad it wasn't another penny shy -- then he could have begun the card, "Now that you've already put in your two cents' worth ..." (Sept. 23, 1969) ...

IN deference to the strike situation, at the home of the Randolph Crossleys the other day, Susan Crum and Kerry Cloward were married, and with the permission of the bride and groom, Mrs. Crossley arranged for the guests to throw not rice, but birdseed. Thus while the wedding party had a feast, so did the birds from the surrounding neighborhood and no rice -- which is in short supply -- was wasted. (Sept. 21, 1971) ...

THERE was Hawaiian Regent GM Georg Rafael at a gourmet dinner in the Ilikai when a large theater light came crashing down and hit him in the head. Luckily, he wasn't seriously injured. (Sept. 27, 1973) ...

GOLFING note: Isle resident Dave Scatchered, largest single stockholder of Labatt's Beer, Canada's best seller, used a seven-iron and hit a hole-in-one at the No. 7 hole at Oahu Country Club last week, but Bill Schwallie, pro at Oahu, says instead of buying the clubhouse a round, millionaire Scatchered tried to buy the clubhouse. (Sept. 23, 1979) ...

DEMONSTRATING her Chinese specialties today and again tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the housewares department of Liberty House, Ala Moana, is Louise Fong, known to her KSFO listeners in San Francisco as "The Happy Cooker." She'll also conduct a cooking school there on Oct. 2 and 3 and again Oct. 9 and 10. (Sept. 24, 1982) ...

THERE was Joe Buckman encountering a French-accented gent, cigar in hand, waiting for an elevator at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Assuming he was a tourist, Buckman asked, "Enjoying yourself here?" "I sure am," came the reply from Serge D'Rovencourt. "I'm the general manager." (Sept. 21, 1984) ...

WITH Dieter Seeger being promoted to resident manager of the Hilton Hawaiian Village, it paves the way for Noel Trainor (late of Bagwells and the Mauna Lani) to step up from assistant to food and beverage manager for the 2,612-room hotel. It's a big move for young Trainor, who'll now oversee 10 restaurants, 13 lounges and a huge banquet convention facility. It involves the care and feeding of up to 10,000 people a day. And I have a hard time cooking for one! (Sept. 26, 1984) ...

THE current edition of the Liquor Commission News Letter, which goes out to all liquor license holders in the state, has some suggestions on how to avoid overserving. The section titled "Protect Yourself" begins with an unassailable premise: "Crippled customers, dead customers or customers who subject you to serious legal problems are not good customers." OK so far. The next sentence is the clincher: "One of the best ways to protect yourself from the problems brought on by overserving is to make sure that you don't overserve." Must be a logician writing that newsletter. (Sept. 23, 1986) ...

SINGER Julio Iglesias took time out from his Kahala Hilton respite after a big L.A. concert and took a party of 14 to dinner at the Black Orchid in Restaurant Row. (Sept. 23, 1988) ...

IT was hard to believe yesterday when I was told my old boss and friend Hobe Duncan had died in his sleep in China. Hobe and I followed similar paths from Iowa to Hawaii and eventually to the Star-Bulletin where he held a variety of jobs, most notable executive editor. He was a delightful guy but would be the first to argue a point if he felt he was right, which he often did. He often was, too. My lasting regret is that when I got a letter from him from Beijing, where he was spending a year working for a Chinese news agency, I never got around to answering it. This is inadequate, but goodbye, boss. I'll miss you. (Sept. 23, 1988) ...
