TOKYO -- Yokozuna Asashoryu (12-2) bounced back from back-to-back losses with a win over Chiyotaikai (10-4) today to clinch the title at the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament.
Asashoryu improved to 6-3 against Chiyotaikai, who is one of five tied for second place at 10-4 with one day of matches remaining.
Chiyotaikai takes on Tochiazuma (10-4) tomorrow. Tochiazuma defeated Kaio (7-7) today and has the upper hand on Chiyotaikai, beating him 14 of the 22 times the two have met, including the last four in a row.
Others at 10-4 are: Iwakiyama, who beat Tamarikido (6-8); Wakanosato, who beat Kotomitsuki (10-4); and Kyokutenho, who beat Aminishiki (9-5).
Kotomitsuki and Kyokutenho face off today, with Kotomitsuki owning a 5-2 record in the series. Kyokutenho won the last time the two squared off, last year at Nagoya.
Hawaii-born yokozuna Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani) is sitting out the tournament with an injury.
