[ TURNING POINT ]

Brewster fumble kills Hawaii momentum

Hawaii was leading Nevada-Las Vegas by a touchdown in the second quarter and looking for more when UNLV safety Jamaal Brimmer made the game's biggest defensive play.

Brimmer, who also intercepted a pass later, stripped Hawaii running back Michael Brewster of the ball after Brewster caught a short pass from Tim Chang. Brimmer's play allowed Rebels cornerback Ruschard Dodd-Masters to recover the fumble and return it 22 yards to the Hawaii 16.

"I really don't know what to say," Brewster said. "It just happened. I wish it didn't, but it did."

Dyante Perkins scored on a 5-yard run three plays later to tie the game and take away the momentum -- a precious commodity the Warriors rarely owned thereafter.

[ COMING UP ]

Warriors open WAC season in next game

Hawaii hosts pesky nemesis Rice in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams Saturday at Aloha Stadium.

The Warriors usually have problems dealing with the Owls' option offense. But last year UH played enough defense to beat Rice 33-28 in Houston for the Warriors' first win in the series after four tries.

So far this season Rice has lost 48-14 to Houston and 27-24 to Duke in overtime, both on the road. Things don't get easier in today's home opener; the Owls host Texas. The Longhorns lead the series 63-13-1, despite losing to Rice 18-13 at Austin in the schools' last meeting in 1999.
