Susan is back into
paddling after illness


Susan Heitzman will paddle in the Na Wahine O Ke Kai Molokai to Oahu race masters division Sept. 28 and that marks a tremendous accomplishment for Susan. Shortly after paddling in the same event in 2001, Susan was diagnosed with breast cancer. She went through lumpectomy surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and has now built herself up to where she can compete in the Molokai race again. It was no easy task. She started out talking walks with husband Chuck, and eventually going to the gym and getting back into an outrigger canoe and starting to paddle again. Susan is this year's Patti Schuler Recognition Award recipient, an honor she richly deserves, which she will receive at the Boots on the Beach event at the Hilton Lagoon Green Nov. 1. Susan said she will "accept the honor for all the cancer survivors and for all the people who are fighting cancer now" ...

'Island Moments' treat

Emme Tomimbang's "Island Moments" show Wednesday was heavy on the Makaha Sons. Moon Kauakahi and brothers John and Jerome Koko talked about their Nanakuli roots their families and how they felt when their main man, Brother Iz, left the group to go on his own. It was quite moving. The program also featured Kenny Loggins and Jordan Segundo. It will be repeated by KGMB tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. Don't miss it ... Anyone who as grown up here has spent enjoyable time at Kapiolani Park. But not too many people know the park's history and other details about the beauty that were bought to light Tuesday in an excellent hourlong special on KGMB with host Elizabeth Lindsey. It will be repeated Sept. 28 at 3:30 p.m. on KGMB. Don't miss this one, either ...

Neiman Marcus G.M. Al Tomonari and P.R. chief Lucy Chelini were at a Mariposa table Tuesday afternoon with the Hawaii Theatre's Sarah Richards and Elaine Evans, Caper fund-raiser chair Karen Huffman and wine expert Richard Field. They were sampling dishes by Chef Doug Lum that will be served at the Oct. 4 fund-raiser for the theater at the Mariposa. The guests said the food was delicious. Field is donating the wine and other drinks. Call Elaine at 791-1302 for $225 tickets ... Jim Nabors and Florence Henderson had lunch at Mariposa Tuesday ...

No. 8 for Sam Choy's

Sam Choy's Diamond Head is celebrating its eighth anniversary Wednesday with food and beverages and music by Ten Feet. It will benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of Hawaii. Cost is $85, with $45 tax deductible. Grazing at the food and drink stations starts at 6:30 p.m. Executive chef Elmer Guzman will have a wide array of Sam's dishes for guests. Call 973-5683 for reservations ...

Fifty of the finishers who participated in the Na Wahine Triathlon Sunday received T-shirts designed by Nora Meijide. Nora's daughters, Candes Gentry and Corin Gentry-Balding, participated. Winning the overall race for the second year in a row was Tanya Sells. Candes, a former Miss Hawaii, was tops in her age group and was fourth overall. It was Corin's first event after having a baby three months ago. Nora wanted to compete but settled for taking photos ...
