High Holy Days
get under way
Friday night

High Holy Days to mark the Jewish New Year will begin Friday with Rosh Hashana and end 10 days later with Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.

Jewish congregations will observe this period of prayer, fasting, self-examination and repentance to mark the creation of the world. The world is 5,763 years old, according to the Torah, the Jewish bible.

Rabbi Itchel Krasnjansky, of Chabad of Hawaii, is calling for the community to intensify its participation in the upcoming services in response to "continuing horrific acts of terror perpetrated upon the people of Israel and upon our very own servicemen and women in Iraq."

There will be special commemorations of the victims of the ongoing terrorism that Chabad members as well as residents and visitors are welcome to attend, he said.
