Metzger, new teammate advanced to main draw
LOS ANGELES >> Punahou alumnus Stein Metzger enjoyed a good outing in the first SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event with his new partner, Dax Holdren, as the pair made it to the main draw of the Nissan Grand Slam with a 21-18, 21-14 win over Spaniards Raul Mesa and Manuel Carrasco.
Metzger recently split with longtime teammate and fellow Punahou and UCLA alum Kevin Wong.
"It's all behind us now," Metzger said. "That's the nature of our sport, though the timing was a little unusual."
Metzger and Holdren -- and new partners Wong and Eric Fonoimoana -- are hoping to qualify for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
The main draw of the Nissan Grand Slam started today.
