Consequences kick in
each year a school is not
considered ‘in good standing’Schools must meet 37 different criteria to make "adequate yearly progress" under the federal No Child Left Behind law. Those that do so are considered "in good standing." Those that do not are given a year's grace period to improve.
A series of consequences kicks in each year that schools continue to miss the mark. Only high-poverty schools have been monitored long enough to have moved beyond "in good standing." Here is an explanation of each school's status, year by year:
In Good Standing: School made "adequate yearly progress."
In Good Standing, Conditional: School did not make "adequate yearly progress" this year but has a year's grace period to improve.
School Improvement Year 1: School has missed "adequate yearly progress" twice. A two-year improvement plan is required; students are allowed the choice of transferring to schools in good standing.
School Improvement Year 2: School has missed "adequate yearly progress" for three years. Student choice continues; economically disadvantaged students are offered supplemental educational services (tutoring).
Corrective Action: School has missed "adequate yearly progress" for four years. Student choice and supplemental services continue; staff and/or curriculum changes must be made.
Planning for Restructuring: School has missed "adequate yearly progress" for five years. Student choice and supplemental services continue; state initiates major changes, such as replacement of all or most staff; assignment of school operation to the state or a private organization; or conversion to a charter school.
