Be yourself
and show up
in costume
THE Theatre for Youth's annual October fund-raiser, Le Masquerade, is entitled"Once Upon a Spooky Time" this year, but it promises to be a fun and creative evening. One reason is that HTY volunteer board member Tim Bostock has planned the event, a Halloween costume party to be held Oct. 25 in the Monarch Room of the Royal Hawaiian. Bostock is a promoter with a vivid imagination and he's urging everyone attending to come as their favorite children's storybook character. ...
Malice in Wonderland
I'M reminded of a party thrown by Sheila Donnelly, of the SDA public-relations firm, for a friend of hers named Alice. That's right, it was an "Ålice in Wonderland" theme beginning with croquet on the front lawn and a collection of people dressed as characters in the story. She even talked me into dressing up (literally!) and playing a rather hirsute Queen of Hearts. I brought along the late Warren "Waldo" Johnson who donned one of those overly-large Miller Lite hats and went as the Mad Hatter. A brouhaha ensued when I informed Waldo that the Mad Hatter helped himself to other's drinks and he'd be a big hit if he'd take Alice's when she wasn't looking and down it. It was a challenge he happily accepted and everyone there had a ball except the birthday girl who was steamed. If Le Masquerade is as successful as the "Alice" party was, it should be a huge hit ...
SCOUTS from Troops 42 and 33 were joined by adult volunteers in "storming the drains" in Manoa and labeling more than 1,000 of them with a stenciled "No dumping. Leads to ocean" message. It was a lead-off to "The Kuleana Project," an environmental protection program jointly sponsored by Malama o Manoa and the Board of Water Supply. Students from various schools in the area will be visiting homes to conduct a survey on whether residents would help out by changing their water usage practices. Malama o Manoa's Daniel Dinell figures students will have better luck at getting cooperation than adults. The survey will run through January ...
WHILE Martin Denny is no kid, I vividly recall listening to his "Exotica" sounds at Don the Beachcomber's in the International Market Place when I was a kid, illegally sipping a Singapore Sling. How is that possible, you ask? Denny is now 92, and Don Tiki's is holding a tribute to Denny and his exotic sounds at the Hawaii Theatre on Oct. 4. Denny can still create that exotic sound on the piano today. Sounds like a great tribute to a deserving isle icon ...
Hip HIFF
THE Hawai'i International Film Festival is holding a fund-raiser to benefit HIFF featuring renowned jazz singer Lou Rawls. The concert will take place under the stars at the Koko Marina Centers new renovated Courtyard on Oct. 29. And if watching the man who made musical magic with "Lady Love," "You'll Never Find" and "Natural Man" isn't enough, there'll also be a sneak preview of one of HIFF's award-winning independent feature films.
